Associate Professor Kazuyuki Matsuhira received 22st Outstanding Paper Award of the Physical Society of Japan on March 19, 2017. In recognition of important achievements towards the progress of physics, this award is given to the outstanding papers selected among original research articles published in the Journal of the Physical Society of Japan, Progress of Theoretical and Experimental Physics, and JPS Conference Proceedings for the past ten years.
The award paper is a co-authored paper with the Tokyo Metropolitan University, Kyoto University, the University of Tokyo and the National Institute of Standards and Technology. This paper experimentally reveals that the magnetic excitation in "spin ice" state, which has a macroscopic degenerate ground state, is well described by the creation of magnetic monopoles; the magnetic monopoles are defined by the points-like topological defects caused by spin-flip from "spin ice" ground state.
Associate Professor Kazuyuki Matsuhira received the 21st Outstanding Paper Award of the Physical Society of Japan as the first author last year, it is the second consecutive award.
